Wilmington Police list mounted unit for possible budget cut

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) –The Wilmington Police Department has identified its mounted unit as a potential area for budget cuts as city departments evaluate ways to reduce spending.

City officials have asked all departments to take part in a budget exercise aimed at identifying cost-saving measures. As part of that process, the police department listed its mounted unit — which includes five horses and four mounted officers — as one option for reduction.

A police spokesman said eliminating the mounted unit would result in a total savings of just over $350,000. The department said all officers currently assigned to the unit would be reassigned to other roles within the department.

City Council will make the final decision on whether the proposed cuts will move forward.
