WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — In Wilmington, city leaders are considering revamping its ordinance on panhandling.
During Tuesday’s council meeting, city staff shared a presentation about what they called an issue in the city.
City attorney John Joye made it clear that panhandling was a constitutional right upheld by the first amendment — meaning outlawing it entirely is not an option.
Right now Wilmington Police is working on enforcing laws commonly associated with panhandling, like impeding traffic. Staff is coming up with a set of recommendations for council to consider for updating the city’s panhandling ordinance.
