Wilmington storage unit broken into, items stolen
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Wilmington police continue to investigate a string of thefts at the Secur-care Self Storage facility on College Road.
One of the units that was broken into was rented by Khadijah Glover.
Glover went to the facility on October 28th to drop off some belongings, but she was shocked when she opened the door to her unit.
“Panic, confusion, disbelief,” Glover said. “I thought this can’t be happening, this isn’t real. This is just a figment of my imagination. But then reality set in that nearly everything was gone.”
Many items were missing, from clothes to a laptop, many of which Glover said would be impossible to replace.
She couldn’t believe something like this had happened to her.
Glover later found out from Wilmington police that at least 7 units had been broken into at the facility, including hers.
She also claims that there weren’t any security cameras at this particular location.
Wilmington Police Department Lieutenant Greg Willett said along with keeping track of what items are in your storage unit, the best way to protect your property is to make the thief’s target harder to break into, known as target hardening.
“If somebody is determined to steal something that is yours or break into something that is yours, you basically have to invest more into protecting it than they’re willing to invest breaking into it,” Willett said.
A lesson Glover learned the hard way.
If you do need to rent a storage unit, look for one equipped with 24-hour digital surveillance cameras, and make sure those cameras are placed throughout the facility, not just at the entrance.
