WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Mark Price hasn’t been the head coach of the Charlotte 49ers men’s basketball team very long. What’s his biggest impact so far? The new connection from Wilmington to Charlotte. Click the icon above to see our report on the 49ers.
Price hired former UNCW assistant coach Andre Gray to join his staff. Price hired former UNCW assistant Houston Fancher to join his staff. On top of that two players with Wilmington connections will be heading to Charlotte: Anthony VanHook (via Cape Fear Community College) and Ridell Camidge ( former Ashley High standout who played at New Hanover his senior year).
Anthony Vanhook spent the last two basketball seasons in the Port City. He was a mainstay at Cape Fear Community College, but it’s now time to move on. Vanhook will be a Charlotte 49er for the upcoming season with two years of eligibity.
Ridell Camidge used to attend Ashley High School. Then he transferred to New Hanover. Camidge played one year of college ball at Cloud Community College. He recently signed with Charlotte. Camidge will have three years of eligibility. “Obviously coming in late you’re having to find guys that are under rocks sometimes that people are overlooking,” Mark Price said. “We feel good about the guys that we have signed in here.” Mark Price also feel good about the coaching staff he’s put together. It includes former UNCW assistant coach Andre Gray and former Seahawks assistant Houston Fancher. “Houston Fancher was a head coach at Appalachian State for 9 years. I know about the game, haven’t been around the college game though for the last 9 years, so there are always holes there that need to be filled and I wanted guys around me that have a lot of experience at this level.”
Mark Price is primarily known as an NBA guy, but he’ll be the first to admit it helps to have close friends who’ve been around the block on the collegiate level that are not on staff. “Bobby Cremins has been a mentor of mine ever since I played for him. We’re extremely close and Buzz Peterson (former UNCW head basketball coach) obviously working with the Hornets last year we became really close. Buzz just got out of the college game recently. He’s been extremely helpful as well.’
