Wilmington to consider resolution asking DEQ to stop Chemours from producing GenX

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) —  As flourochemical compounds continue to show up in the  water samples taken from the Cape Fear River, the City of Wilmington is considering a resolution asking the NC Department of Environmental Quality to stop Chemours from producing GenX.

In September, the NCDEQ issued a partial consent order to Chemours, requiring the company to stop discharging wastewater containing GenX to the Cape Fear River.

Despite that, levels of GenX still appear in water samples. Chemours, which is located at the Bladen-Cumberland County line, has also received two notices of violation relating to spills at the facility.

The City of Wilmington’s resolution says despite Chemours’ claims it trucks wastewater containing flourochemicals off-site, the compounds continue to appear in the Cape Fear River and the Cape Fear Public Utility Authority’s drinking water.

The resolution also states the ‘tenants of the Fayetteville Wroks site have repeatedly demonstrated that they are not capable of continuing operations at the facility in a manner that does not cause the release of GenX and other flourochemcial compounds into the Cape Fear River.’

New Hanover County is also supporting CFPUA in their request that DEQ order Chemours to stop producing GenX.

City Council will vote on the resolution at their Tuesday meeting.
