Wilmington woman dead after crash on Shipyard Blvd.

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A woman is dead after a Tuesday night crash at the intersection of Independence and Shipyard boulevards.

According to a Wilmington Police spokeswoman, it happened around 9 p.m. after a near head-on crash between two vehicles.

The victim has been identified as Maria Cruz, 49. WPD said she was riding in the back seat of the car that turned in front of a SUV while it was driving through the intersection. Officers say Cruz was not wearing a seatbelt and died at the scene.

Four other people were taken to the hospital, including two children.

WPD said no charges have been filed at this time.
