Wilmington City Council gets 2 new members
WILMINGTON — Wilmington’s City Council is now set and there will be two new faces on the council.
Ronald Sparks and Kristi Tomey were the top vote-getters, beating out incumbent Pat Delair and newcomer Susan Clarke.
Tomey and Delair were neck-and-neck nearly the entire race. At one point they were only four votes apart. But Tomey was able to beat out the incumbent by about 300 votes.
Sparks had command of nearly the entire night, though.
Kristy Tomey says she is excited about getting to work with the mayor and the new council. She says a main focus needs to be Wilmington’s crime problem.
“People are concerned about crime, as they should be,” Tomey said. “We’ve had a lot of recent murders happening in our area. And since the police department had asked for resources in the budget and they didn’t get it, it’s something that’s really resonated to the top. And I was one of the only candidates who was talking about that issue. And, you know, I want to start that process now. What do they need? Let’s find that out, and let’s make sure we get that into the budget cycle for next year.”

Assuming there are no changes after the votes are canvassed next week, Tomey and Sparks will take office December 4.
