Wilmington’s Annual Battleship Half Marathon
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — While some of us were enjoying a relaxing Sunday morning, over 2,200 runners laced up their shoes and hit the ground running for the 26th Annual Battleship Half Marathon.
This 13.1-mile race started on Water Street in downtown Wilmington, taking runners across all three bridges, past Greenfield Lake, and finishing at Water Street Park.
For those looking for a shorter distance, there were also 10K and 5K options, which stayed in the downtown area but still offered scenic views of the USS North Carolina Battleship.
Many runners were cheered on by family and friends, with posters and signs waiting for them at the finish line.
But for some participants, like college students Rennie and Raegan, their supporters weren’t just on the sidelines—they were running right alongside them.
Rennie:
“We were just sitting on the couch one day last school year, we were juniors, and I said ‘Let’s run a half marathon.’ So, we did it, and then people kept joining in!”
Raegan:
“It’s so fun to have a group of girls to do it with instead of doing it alone. Because doing it alone is really hard. And it’s just—we all push each other to get up and go out for our training runs when it’s cold and dark.”
You can find the results for all three races on the events website.
