Wings Up Player Profiles: Devontae Cacok

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Devontae Cacok is a sophomore forward who has been the heartbeat and the energizer for the Seahawks and their fans all season long.

His historic season of dunks has been critical to the success of the team in teal and motivates him to hammer another one down.

“It’s a great experience,” Cacok said. “Seeing everyone get rowdy and hyped and makes me excited. It makes me want to keep playing and keep dunking.”

Cacok has caught the national attention of many with his dunks, especially when he rocked the rim 11 times against Pheffer for the school record earlier this season, but this isn’t new for Cacok.

He’s already had his share of successes during his freshman season last year.

“Of course winning the championship in your first year, you win a lot,” Cacok said. “You experience a lot more than other people have in four or five years of college. It’s a great experience. Everything about it I enjoy.”

It had to be a great feeling to succeed as a team so early in a career, but it also taught him lessons going forward to continue to succeed.

“I learned a lot,” Cacok said. “I learned it takes a lot of hard work to get there. It’s nothing that just happens overnight. It takes countless hours of work to get there.”

Knowing that he’s surrounded by several teammates from last season’s success keeps him motivated to continue to win.

“Of course we have a lot of the same people then adding more people to our unit makes it even better for us,” Cacok said. “We have chemistry we just have to add people together. I feel like it’s going to work perfectly this year.”

Some people can get a little complacent after coming in and winning so early on, after all this is his second CAA title in his first two years, but that’s not what Cacok thinks about when he recalls his early success.

“It motivates me a lot,” Cacok said. “It makes me want to get back in the gym every single day and get back to that place and get further. I know we have a lot of expectations this season and we just want to be able to accomplish all of them.”

Knowning how last season ended, Devontae Cacok and the Seahawks know what they need to keep driving and move on.

UNCW takes on UVA this Thursday at 12:40 p.m. The game will be broadcast on truTV.
