WMPO awarded 100 bicycle helmets from NCDOT bicycle helmet Initiative

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Wilmington Urban Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (WMPO) has been awarded 100 children’s bicycle helmets from the North Carolina Department of Transportation’s (NCDOT) Bike Helmet Initiative.
These helmets will be distributed to children from low-income families along with bicycle safety education as part of the WMPO’s outreach efforts in 2024.
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, helmet use reduces the risk of head injury by 85 percent, brain injury by 88 percent, and severe brain injury by at least 75 percent.
This year, NCDOT, through the Bicycle Helmet Initiative grant program, will provide over 12,000 bicycle helmets to 157 organizations across North Carolina.
