Woman hopes to bring cat cafe to Wilmington
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — You cat to be kidding me! Nope! A cat café could soon be coming to the Port City.
It’s a place where you can enjoy a cup of coffee in a room filled with adoptable kitties.
Delia Eveland has always loved cats. She moved from Guatemala to North Carolina about 12 years ago and now she hopes to bridge her heritage and passion for helping animals through this new business.
The cafe will be called The Scratching Post.
“No, you don’t bring your cat in, you bring yourself and there are already cats living there that you can adopt or not adopt and just hang out with,” Eveland said.
The cafe will offer coffee, tea, pastries, and vegetarian food options and will cost $5 to get in.
“I’m actually going to Guatemala next month to source out our coffee location,” Eveland said.
She first found out about the business concept in Austin, Texas and thought Wilmington would be the perfect spot for another but the location is not set in stone yet.
“The property we are looking at house and we are going to transform that into a cat oasis if you will and it’s totally separate from the mobile unit that is going to be the coffee shop,” Eveland said.
She is working with local non-profits like Adopt An Angel and 910 Cat Tails to hopefully find more kitties a forever home.
“It’s a cause super dear to my heart,” Eveland said. “I have loved cats since I was a little girl and I would love nothing more than, you know, maybe not find every cat a home but give everyone a chance.”
She hopes to have the cafe open by late fall.
