PENDER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Fire investigators are working to determine what caused an early morning house fire. A woman’s body was discovered in the home, but there’s no word on how she died.

Pender Emergency Management Director Tom Collins said crews responded to a fire in the 5200 block of Point Caswell Road, at the intersection of Rooks Road, at around 3:30 a.m. Collins said the fire had been burning for some time and it took crews several hours to extinguish the fire and remaining hot spots. The Pender County Sheriff’s Office and SBI are assisting in the investigation, which Collins said is common when a body is found in a house fire.

Collins said a woman who is around 24 years old, along with her child and boyfriend live at the home. The man was not home at the time and the child was staying with grandparents due to a power outage in the area, he said.
