Women organize to feed elderly in need during disaster

WHITEVILLE, NC (WWAY) — Sierra Britt and her family woke up Tuesday morning and decided they were going to help those in need. They cooked and served a hot breakfast to the elderly in the Oak Village and Sandy Ridge apartments.

When Britt found out many people have not eaten in days because they do not have power she said they had to do something about it.

“It’s not for likes,” Britt said. “It’s what we are suppose to do in a time like this. We need to come together.”

The kitchen was packed Tuesday afternoon while these ladies prepared dinner for folks still without power in Whiteville. They first found out about the situation through social media.

“My sister last night had posted a comment on Facebook, and one of the guys from Charlotte said his aunt, who is a diabetic hadn’t eaten in three days.” Britt said.

When she delivered the meal, she quickly realized many in the Oak Village and Sandy Ridge communities were starving.

“I was like at seven in the morning, we are going to up and we are going up and we are going to cook these people breakfast.” Britt said.

Britt and her family and friends served more than sixty meals Monday morning.

“We both were crying,” Britt said. “They were crying, I was crying. Some have dialysis and high blood pressure and all those other things, diabetic, you just don’t know. the looks of their faces was priceless.”

After breakfast, they went by the store, stocked up, and began cooking again.

“Instead of complaining we need to be off our tails, the ones who can, and help out these people who need our help.” Britt said.

Britt says this is one way to give back to those who have given us so much.

“They took care of us, it’s time to take care of them,” Britt said.

They served dinner in the Sandy Ridge and Oak Village communities. Their goal was to feed the elderly first, but they will try to feed anyone who needs a hot meal tonight.
