Women to run across NC for mental health awareness ending in Surf City
SURF CITY, NC (WWAY) — Team Inspire, a group of local women, will run from Roanoke Rapids to Surf City, North Carolina this week.
The 170 mile trek will begin on May 4. The group plans to cover about 50 miles a day arriving in Surf City on May 7.
The women have been inspired by the original cross-country Icebreaker Run from California to Washington DC last May, with the purpose of bringing substance abuse and mental health awareness to the communities along the route.
Team Coordinator Rebecca Moxey, a recovering alcoholic, celebrating over 10 years of sobriety, and two time Ironman, encourages everyone to like the team’s Facebook event page to learn how to sponsor the team, track the progress of the runners, and plan to join the finish celebration.
“For more than five years, the ladies of Team Inspire have been quietly helping each other through a variety of very difficult and emotional issues – mental and physical illness, addiction, PTSD, and suicide, to name a few,” Moxey said. ” Now, our hope has grown so we want to share it with others. We will have a running dialogue as we cross the State holding out our hands so others may grasp it.”
The group will use the event as a launching point for more programs and resources for the community.
There will be a finish party on May 7 from 2 pm – 5 pm at Surf City’s Sound Side Park.
