Work trip for Tennessee man nets $1 million lottery

RALEIGH, N. (AP) – A Tennessee man traveled to North Carolina for work, and it turned into a very profitable trip.

Officials from the N.C. Education Lottery said Charles Rollins of Whitwell, Tennessee, was working on a construction project when he stopped at a New Bern convenience store. Rollins said he had planned to buy a Powerball ticket, but decided to get an Ultimate Millions ticket as well.

Rollins scratched the $30 ticket and discovered he’d won a $1 million prize.

He had the choice on Tuesday of taking the annuity that has 20 payments of $50,000 a year or a lump sum of $600,000. He chose the lump sum and claimed more than $415,000 after federal and state tax withholdings. He said he plans to use the money to pay off his house.
