WPD: Man charged after allegedly driving onto sidewalk, injuring pedestrian

WILMINGTON (WWAY) — Updated 8:50 a.m.  The Wilmington Police Department has arrested a man accused of driving onto the sidewalk and hitting three pedestrians in downtown Wilmington.

WPD says just after 11 p.m. Thursday, 44-year-old Thomas Clay Robinson Jr. of Chapel Hill was driving on Nutt Street near the Wilmington Convention Center when he failed to maintain lane control. He allegedly drove onto the sidewalk on the right side of the road and struck a pole, three pedestrians, and a tree before his vehicle came to a stop.

One of the pedestrians was transported to Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center with serious injuries.

Robinson has been charged with Felony Serious Injury by Vehicle, Driving While Impaired, Reckless Driving Wanton Disregard, and Expired Registration. He is being held at the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center under a $75,000 secured bond.
