WPD horse rides off into the sunset

CASTLE HAYNE, NC (WWAY) — An example of a much older mode of transportation is heading into the next phase of his life.

Wilmington Police horse Comet officially retired back on Tuesday, with the Wilmington City Council approving his retirement.

The 25-year-old had spent the past 21 years with the department and was a common sight downtown, walking alongside his partner horse Ranger.

Elijah Baker has been Comet’s rider for the past year.

He said it’s been special working with Comet.

“I rode him for a year,” Baker said. “You spend a year with an animal, you guys have a connection and he’s like my partner. Never hurt me or anything so that’s always good. And, we take care of each other.”

Comet will spend the rest of his years on a farm owned by former WPD officer John Gordon, who also rode Comet for many years.
