WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Wilmington Police Department has provided more details on an attempted kidnapping in downtown Wilmington.

Daniel Jason Summer, 44, is charged with second degree kidnapping, assault on a child under 12, and resisting arrest.

Police say on Friday just before 5:30 p.m., officers with the Wilmington Police Department’s Downtown Task Force responded to the area of 9 N. Front Street following a report of a man restraining another individual.

When officers arrived, they spotted Summers being held down by another man.

Police say investigators learned that Summers had grabbed a 7-year-old girl, forced her to the ground, and refused to let go. As the father attempted to pull the suspect off his daughter, a nearby man intervened to assist. During the struggle, the child was able to crawl away to safety.

When officers arrived, the man was holding the suspect on the ground. Officers took Summers into custody without further incident and placed him in handcuffs. He was transported to the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center and is being held without bond.

Police say the incident remains under investigation.

Anyone with additional information is encouraged to contact the Wilmington Police Department or submit tips anonymously through Tip 411.
