Wreaths Across America brings mobile exhibit to the Cape Fear

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Wreaths Across America made a stop in the Port City Wednesday with a mobile education exhibit.

The nonprofit is responsible for the national wreath-laying ceremony at veterans’ graves sites across the country every December.

Each year, around 3 million volunteers take part, making sure the names of fallen veterans are not forgotten.

WAA’s mobile education exhibit tells the story of how the wreath-laying started and serves as a welcome home state for Vietnam-era veterans.

Vietnam veterans are given a pin to commemorate their service and a letter signed by the president.

Mary-Joe Schnepf is a Blue Star mother and she said the exhibit helps fulfill the organization’s motto.

“The motto of Wreaths Across America is ‘remember, honor and teach.'” Schnepf said. “By remembering, the wreaths are put on the graves, by honoring, we’re remembering our veterans that are still here. This serves as a welcome home station for our Vietnam-era veterans. And to teach is to teach the public, that’s why our exhibit is here.”

The exhibit is making other stops in the Cape Fear region:
