WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — More than 250 ‘Wreaths of Honor’ will grace the Battleship North Carolina this holiday season, a tribute to veterans and active-duty service members organized by the Friends of the Battleship North Carolina.

The 20-inch evergreen wreaths, purchased by families and friends nationwide, will be displayed along the ship’s lifelines starting Saturday, Dec. 7, and remain on view through the first weekend of January. This marks the third year of the “Wreaths of Honor” program.

At approximately 1 p.m. on Saturday, volunteers will observe a moment of silence to mark the anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Wreaths will also be placed in the ship’s Memorial Room to honor the more than 11,000 North Carolinians who died in World War II and in the Crew Roster Room to recognize the 8,000 sailors and Marines who served aboard the USS North Carolina between 1941 and 1947.
