Wreaths were hung along the lifelines of The Battleship North Carolina, to remember those who serve our country
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY)– The Battleship North Carolina, and Battleship North Carolina Friends, hosted their fourth annual Wreaths of Honor, to remember those who died at pearl harbor eighty-four years ago.
In a unique way to honor the veterans and active-duty service members during the holiday season, people were able to buy twenty-inch wreaths, to honor someone they know. Each wreath was hung on the lifelines of the ship, each with a ribbon and a card with the name of the individual being honored.
Dennis Maurer, a volunteer and veteran himself, says it is important seeing each wreath being hung.
“There is a lot of sentiment that goes into each one of these that are hung up. Especially knowing that it’s a loved one who has purchased the memory of the individual service member,” said Maurer.
More than two-hundred wreaths were hung along the ship, which was then followed by a special ceremony held in the battleship’s memorial room.
