WWAY hosted a blood drive for The American Red Cross

Leland, NC (WWAY) — WWAY teamed up with The American Red Cross to host a blood drive. About 43 people donated blood at our event center as the timing was crucial.

The American Red Cross is experiencing a significant blood shortage because of high demand. That prompted Julie Opatich to make a donation.

“I have a blood type that’s in high demand. I’m O-Positive, it can save somebody’s life either an accident victim, a trauma victim”, Opatich said.

In addition to O-Positive, the Red Cross says there’s a shortage for for type  (O), ( A)-Negative, and( B)- negative blood. If you want to donate blood go to the Red Cross website for a location near you to make an appointment.

If you do so before February 28, 2026, you will receive a $20 e-gift card to your choice of merchant.
