NEW HANOVER COUNTY (WWAY) — Many high school student athletes showcase their talents playing their respective sports, but there are some who get it done in their communities and classrooms as well.
WWAY’s Inaugural Student Athlete of the Week is New Hanover High School’s Kellum Brown. The 15-year-old sophomore wildcat plays on the basketball team. In the classroom, Brown has a 4.1 GPA. He’s also served as a student leader for the United Communities Assistance Network for three years, giving out masks and COVID tests to young children during the pandemic.
Brown, along with his basketball teammates, also read to young children at Snipes Academy every Thursday morning in what they call Readers for Leaders. Brown said there are resources out there for student athletes looking to make an impact.
“You know, talk to your counselors and stuff. They really can help you out and like get you in great programs and then, listen to your parents Just get in any programs that you’re available to get into,” Brown said.
