LAKE WACCAMAW, N.C. (WWAY) – The WWAY Student Athlete of the Week is Mackenzi Clemmons from East Columbus High School.

The junior first baseman for the Gator softball team is heavily involved in her community away from the diamond. Clemmons volunteers at food banks and shelters in Whiteville while also serving as a Sunday School teacher.

Academically, she is part of the Beta Club, National Honor Society, FFA and is also a school marshall.

East Columbus won their first round playoff game via forfeit and Clemmons feels they are well rested as they begin their pursuit of a state championship.

“That is the end goal for us,” Clemmons said. “As we go into this game on Friday, we didn’t have our first round in the playoffs, we really hope to accomplish a state championship. We hope to work through all the kinks now so that way when we get later in the playoffs that we excel and do our best.”
