WILMINGTON, NC (UNCW) -– Freshman Nicole Lott tallied a match-high 16 kills and senior Christi Laite added 12 to lead UNCW to a 3-0 (25-14, 25-22, 27-25) sweep of Towson in Colonial Athletic Association volleyball action Friday at Hanover Hall.
The Seahawks improved to 15-8 overall and 4-5 in CAA play as they recorded their seventh victory in eight home matches this season. The Tigers, meanwhile, slipped to 8-21 and 1-9 with the setback.
Lott fashioned a .406 hitting percentage (16-3-32) and Laite finished with a .261 (12-2-24) attack clip to power a Seahawks lineup that finished with a .303 hitting percentage for the match (47-11-119). Sophomore Victoria Phillips dished out a match-high 20 assists and freshman Alyssa Desjardins added 19.
Sophomore Meredith Peacock recorded seven total blocks (two solo) while Laite and senior Courtney Porter added five and six total blocks, respectively, to highlight a UNCW blocking effort that finished with 13 total blocks.
Senior Haley Collins notched a team-high 14 digs. Junior Morgan Kline added nine and two players – Phillips and sophomore Lindsay Hartmann – added eight apiece.
Junior Saitaua Iosia notched 10 kills and junior Victoria Williams added nine for
Towson, who combined to post a .137 hitting percentage (37-20-134). Sophomore Kyana Miller tallied a team-best 19 assists while junior Paige Sekerak led all players with 17 digs.
UNCW cruised to a 25-14 victory in the first set, recording 13 kills with just one attack error in 30 total attempts for a .400 hitting percentage as it pulled away from Towson early on its way to the 11-point triumph.
The second set saw the Tigers use a 5-2 spurt midway through the frame to build a 17-11 advantage, only to see the Seahawks score six straight points to spark a 14-5 run that closed the frame and gave the UNCW 25-22 victory.
In a tight third set that featured a total of 10 ties and four lead changes, the Seahawks trailed 25-24 when a kill by Kline and back-to-back attack errors by the Tigers allowed UNCW to erase the one-point deficit and claim the match with a 26-24 triumph.
Both teams return to action Sunday. UNCW hosts Delaware while Towson travels to College of Charleston. Start time for both matches is set for 1 p.m.
