NEWARK, DE (UNCW) — –Freshman Nicole Lott recorded 13 kills and junior Morgan Kline added 11 to lead UNCW to a 3-2 (25-18, 21-25, 25-18, 20-25, 19-17) victory over Delaware in Colonial Athletic Association volleyball action Friday at the Bob Carpenter Center.

The Seahawks improved to 18-9 overall and 7-6 in CAA play as they picked up fourth victory in five matches. The Blue Hens, meanwhile, slipped to 11-16 and 3-10 as they suffered their seventh straight setback.

“This was a thrilling match and I felt we played well under pressure,” said UNCW Head Coach Amy Bambenek. “Delaware played really tough and had a lot of offensive weapons working tonight. We did a good god of playing a low-error game along with some guts and heart to win match point. This was a total team effort.”

Lott fashioned a .310 hitting percentage (13-0-42) while Kline posted a .200 attack clip (11-3-40) to power a UNCW lineup that combined for 55 kills and a .212 hitting percentage for the match. Kline added 13 digs and freshman Alyssa Desjardins pitched in 12 bumps to go along with a team-high 29 assists as both players posted their fifth double-double of the season. Senior Haley Collins recorded a team-high 26 digs and sophomore Meredith Peacock finished with a match-best eight total blocks (one solo)

Autumn Jenkins tallied a match-high 17 kills to lead four Delaware players in double figures. Kali Funk dished out a match-high 51 and Ariel Shonk tallied 33 digs to pace four Blue Hens players in double digits.

With the score tied at 15-all in the first set, a kill by Lott sparked the Seahawks to an 8-3 spurt that closed out the frame and gave the Seahawks a 25-18 victory.

Delaware rallied for a 25-21 victory in the second set, using a kill by Katie Hank break an 18-all deadlock and score seven of the last 10 points of the set to record the four-point triumph.

UNCW cruised to a 25-18 victory in set three as it took advantage of a 10-3 spurt early in the frame to build a 15-8 cushion on its way to an eight-point victory.

The Blue Hens once again battled back in the fourth set, erasing a 16-11 deficit with a 13-4 run that closed out the set and forced a fifth frame with a 25-20 win.

In the fifth set, UNCW used a 4-2 spurt to force match point, 14-10, only to see Delaware tally four unanswered points to tie the frame at 14-all. The two teams would trade points with the Seahawks forcing match points on three more occasions before a Blue Hens attack error and a kill by Lott on back-to-back points broke a 17-all deadlock and gave the Seahawks a 19-17 decision and the match.

Both teams close out the regular season Saturday. UNCW travels to Towson for a 3 p.m. matinee while Delaware hosts College of Charleston at 7 p.m.

EARLYSVILLE, VA (UNCW) -– Seniors John Riemer and Ashley Wybersky were the top runners once again for UNCW as the Seahawk cross country teams wrapped up their season Friday at the NCAA Southeast Regionals on a challenging course outside Charlottesville.

Competing in sunny, breezy conditions with temperatures hovering around 60 degrees, the men’s team finished 29th out of 35 teams that scored, while the women wound up 28th out of 38 with enough entries to score.

Eastern Kentucky won the 10K men’s race with a score of 58 points, placing ahead of host Virginia (96), N.C. State (101), UNC Chapel Hill (137) and Virginia Tech (167). UNC Greensboro’s Paul Chelimo won the individual title with a time of 28:37, edging N.C. State’s Andrew Colley at 28:38.

On the women’s side, Virginia clamed first place with 57 points, trailed by William & Mary (69), N.C. State (142), Duke (143) and Virginia Tech (157). W&M’s Emily Stites finished first overall with a time of 19:57, just ahead of Kentucky’s Cally Macumber at 20:07.

Riemer, meanwhile, finished 136th out of the 239 runners with a time of 32:03 for UNCW. Zach Nifong was UNCW’s second best finisher with a time of 32:24, good enough for 153rd place.

“We had good races out of everyone today,” said Layne Schwier, UNCW’s assistant cross country/track and field coach. “We finished about where we thought we would. It’s a big meet, so it’s hard to know where you might end up.

“From top to bottom, everyone had a good race. John ran well and was in control this time. We just lacked the big frontrunner at the front of the pack.”

Wybersky, from Manassas, Va., competed on the same course she ran in high school and came in 118th with a time of 22:46. Rachel Quinn ended up 115th with a 23:10 time.

“Ashley was back in front and we also had a good day on the women’s side,” Schwier said. “We were hoping Ashley would run well because she wanted to go out with a good effort. Considering the second half of the season she’s had, it was a good race for her. Across the board, everyone was solid for the women’s team.

“Overall, we’re pleased with today’s results,” Schwier added. “We had lot better efforts all the way around and it was a good way to end the season.”
