CHARLESTON, South Carolina – Christi Laite recorded 15 kills and the Seahawks totaled 15 blocks as third-seeded UNCW advanced to the semifinals of the Colonial Athletic Association championship tournament with a 3-1 win over sixth-seeded William & Mary on Friday at the North Charleston Convention Center.
The Seahawks improved to 20-9 with the win while the Tribe concluded its season with an 11-21 mark. UNCW also halted a nine-match losing skid to W&M in conference tournament play. The Seahawks will take on second-seed Northeastern at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
Leading the Seahawk charge at the net was Meredith Peacock with 10 blocks. She entered the match ranked 10th nationally in blocks with 1.49 per set. Teammates Courtney Porter, Nicole Lott and Laite each added five blocks on the evening as UNCW built a 15-6 advantage at the net.
In the fourth set, UNCW held a 23-19 lead before the Tribe rattled off four of the next five points to draw even on a kill from Michelle Heath. Tribe then sent a serve long and Leah Gagliardi ended the match with a kill off a feed from Alyssa Desjardins.
The Seahawks hit a combined .246 (49-15-128) on the match while limiting the Tribe to a .040 hitting average.
Peacock collected seven kills in 16 attacks (.438) and no hitting errors. Porter and Morgan Kline added nine and eight kills, respectively.
Paulette Grand Pre led W&M with 10 kills.
Defensively, UNCW’s Haley Collins and W&M’s Celine Alasomuka shared match-high honors with 19 digs.
UNCW’s Victoria Phillips fashioned a double-double of a match-high 26 assists and 17 digs.

WILMINGTON, NC (UNCW) -– Sophomore Chinwe Duru poured in a game-high 18 points, including seven during a pivotal run late in the second half, to lead Tulane to a 55-50 victory over UNCW in collegiate women’s basketball action Friday at Trask Coliseum.
The Green Wave remained undefeated on the season as it improved to 4-0 and gave Head Coach Lisa Stockton her 400th victory at the school. The Seahawks, meanwhile, slipped to 1-4.
Duru was 7-of-11 from the floor and 4-of-5 at the free-throw line to pace the Tulane attack. Junior Jamie Kaplan joined Duru in double figures with 11 points and dished out a game-best six assists as the Green Wave combined for 13 assists on 18 field goals made.
Junior Kelva Atkins tallied 14 points to lead three players in double figures as freshman Brie Mobley and Naqaiyyah Teague finished with 10 points apiece. Teague also pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds for her first career double-double as the Seahawks held a 41-40 advantage on the glass.
Moments after Teague finished a conventional three-point play to cap a 14-2 run and give the Seahawks a 44-43 lead with 6:26 remaining, Duru knocked down a jumper and converted a three-point opportunity on back-to-back possessions to spark an 8-1 spurt that stretched 4:34 and put the Green Wave back in front, 51-45, with 1:31 remaining.
A jumper and free throw by Atkins on consecutive trips down the floor trimmed the Tulane margin to three, 51-48, but Kaplan split a pair of tries at the charity stripe on Tulane’s next possession to push the Green Wave advantage back to four, 52-48.
The Seahawks were unable to score on their next possession and Kaplan was fouled once again, this time making both tries from the line to make it a 54-48 ballgame with 13 ticks on the clock.
A coast-to-coast layup for Atkins with nine seconds showing on the clock pulled the Seahawks within four, but Kaplan would make one of two free throws in her last trip to the line to determine the final margin.
Earlier in the contest, UNCW held a 10-6 lead when a fastbreak jumper by Kaplan ignited an 11-2 spurt that put the Green Wave in front, 17-12.
A pair of free throws by freshman Amber Reeves and a jumper by Teague on back-to-back possessions would halt Tulane’s momentum, but only momentarily, as a 3-pointer by Kaplan sparked another run, this time a 14-4 stretch that gave the Green Wave a 31-20 advantage in the final minute of the first half before freshman D’Asia Cain hit a 3-pointer in the final seconds to make it a 31-23 contest at halftime.
The two teams opened the second half trading baskets over the first eight minutes of the second half when a layup by freshman Ryan Flowers sparked the Seahawks’ 14-2 run that gave them a one-point lead and set up the Green Wave’s decisive outburst.
Tulane shot 42.9 percent (18-of-42) from the floor for the contest, compared to just 29.2 percent (19-of-65) for UNCW.
The Seahawks return to action Nov. 28 as they face Boston College in the 6 p.m. matchup to open the Cancun Challenge in Cancun, Mexico. The Green Wave is back on the court Sunday with a 2 p.m. matinee at NC State.

FAIRFAX, VA (UNCW) -– Valtteri Halonen continued his tremendous showing at the Patriot Invitational, winning two more events and setting a meet record to lead UNCW on the second day of the meet at the McKay Natatoirum.
Host George Mason leads both meets while UNCW holds second and sixth in the men’s and women’s meets, respectively.
Halonen gave the Seahawks wins in the 100 Fly (49.39) and later set a meet record when he edged teammate Michael Baric with a time of 49.81 in the 100 Backstroke. For Halonen, it was his third event win of the meet after winning the 50 Free on Thursday.
UNCW has set a pair of meet records as Halonen joined the men’s 400 Medley Relay who set a record on Thursday.
Jenson Engen, who ranked 45th entering the meet in the 100 Breaststroke, won the women’s event with time of 1:03.59, just missing her season-best time of 1:03.55.
Gabe Thran gave the Seahawks a second-place finish in the 200 Freestyle.
In relay action, UNCW finished second in the 200 Medley Relay in both meets. The meet concludes on Saturday beginning with the preliminaries at 10 a.m.
