ST. LOUIS (AP) – Carlos Beltran capped his latest scintillating postseason performance with an RBI single in the 13th inning early Saturday that lifted the St. Louis Cardinals over the Los Angeles Dodgers 3-2 in the NL championship series opener.

Beltran hit a two-run double early, then threw out a runner at the plate from right field in the 10th to keep the score tied.

In the 13th, he singled into the right-field corner with one out against Kenley Jansen.

It was the longest postseason game for the Dodgers since the 1916 World Series.

Game 2 is Saturday afternoon.

WILMINGTON, NC (UNCW) -– Senior Darcy Horton recorded a match-high 16 kills to lead four players in double figures as College of Charleston defeated UNCW, 3-1 (23-25, 25-14, 25-21, 25-21) in Colonial Athletic Association volleyball action Friday at Hanover Hall.

The Cougars improved to 15-4 on the season and 5-0 in league play as they remained the league’s only undefeated team in CAA play. The Seahawks slipped to 12-7 and 1-4 as they suffered their first loss in five matches at Hanover Hall this season.

Horton paced a potent Cougars attack that hit .309 for the match, recording 64 kills and just 22 errors in 139 total attempts. Junior Sloane White pitched in 12 kills, sophomore Melissa Morello tallied 11 and junior Cara Howley notched 10 to join Horton in double figures. Senior Taeler Davis posted 26 assists and added 10 digs while junior Kallie McKown notched 22 assists and added 11 digs as both players finished with double-doubles.

Junior Morgan Kline tallied 15 kills and senior Christi Laite added 10 for UNCW. Freshman Alyssa Desjardins dished out 22 assists and senior Haley Collins added 20. Sophomore Lindsay Hartmann, the reigning CAA Defensive Player-of-the-Week, led all players with 16 digs.

Trailing 21-19 late in the first set, UNCW scored six of the final eight points of the frame, highlighted by three spikes from freshman Nicole Lott, to rally for a 25-23 victory.

College of Charleston cruised to a 25-14 triumph in game two, tallying 13 of the first 15 points of the frame on its way to build a comfortable cushion that would get no smaller than six the rest of the way.

The Cougars jumped out to a 7-2 lead early in the third set, but the Seahawks responded with a 6-1 spurt to tie the frame at 8-all. The two sides would then trade points until a kill by Slone sparked College of Charleston to score six of the next nine points and take a 21-17 lead. UNCW stalled the Cougars rally by notching three straight points to pull within one, 21-20, but College of Charleston responded with four kills over the last five points of the set to take a 25-21 victory and a 2-1 lead.

In a tight fourth set that featured a total of 10 ties and four lead changes, UNCW trailed 17-14 when a service error led to the Seahawks to tally four of the next five points and tie the match at 18-all. The Cougars would pull away, however, using a kill from Dorton to break the tie and ignite a 7-3 run that gave College of Charleston a 25-21 decision and the match.

Both teams return to action Oct. 18. UNCW hosts James Madison while College of Charleston entertains William & Mary. Start time for both matches is set for 7 p.m.

JOHNSON CITY, TN (UNCW) -– Senior Stefan Brewer carded a season-low two-under-par-70 in the first round to pace UNCW, who is tied with 26th-ranked Memphis, at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate on Friday at the Blackthorn Club.

East Tennessee State leads the nationally-ranked dominated field by seven strokes over 13th-ranked Virginia Tech. The field features six teams ranked in Golfstat’s top-50.

ETSU’s Rhys Pugh, six-under-par-66, holds a one-stroke lead over a trio of golfers including Thomas Birdsey (Wake Forest), Bryace Howell (Furman) and fourth-ranked Scott Vincent (Virginia Tech).

Brewer, who is tied for ninth, played steady golf, recording three birdies and one bogey on the afternoon.
Joining Brewer in the top-20 is freshman Trey Guy, who is tied for 15th at one-under-par.

The tournament continues on Saturday with 18 more holes.

WINSTON-SALEM, NC (UNCW) -– Three players reached the semifinals of their respective brackets as the UNCW men’s tennis team opened action Friday at the Wake Forest Fall Tennis Invitational.

The Seahawks went 8-4 overall in singles and split a pair of doubles matches as 17 teams convened for the bracketed event at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex.

Senior Rafael Aita, sophomore Santtu Leskinen and senior Matt Kealy each advanced to the semifinals in singles action for the Seahawks.

Aita, the 2013 CAA Player-of-the-Year, raced past Iowa’s Jonas Dierckx, 6-2, 6-4, in his first match of the day in A2 Singles and the top-seeded player from Lima, Peru, stymied Penn State’s Alex Fennell, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, to reach the semis.

Leskinen, meanwhile, also won a pair of close matches in B2 Singles. The Helsinki product outlasted Wake Forest’s Nicky Kunz, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, and then upset No. 1 seeded Luke Synn of Furman, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (10), in a thriller.

In D2 Singles, Kealy received a bye in his first match before coming from behind to beat Liberty’s Guillem Seconell, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, to make the semifinals.

In other matches, junior Sam Williams went 1-1 in A1 Singles, losing to Duke’s Josh Levine, 6-2, 6-4, and defeating Furman’s Matt Browne, 6-2, 7-6 (2), and junior Zach Hublitz outlasted Penn State’s Michael Reilly, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, before narrowly losing to Duke’s Cale Hammond, 2-6, 6-2, 7-6 (3).

Sophomore Christian Van der Burgh won his first match in C2 Singles over UNC Charlotte’s Francis Pare, 6-4, 6-1, but dropped a 7-5, 6-2 decision to South Carolina State’s Khalil Naji.

Play continues Saturday in both singles and doubles at the home of the Demon Deacons.

RICHMOND, VA (UNCW) -– Senior Michael Baric claimed both the 200 IM and 100 Backstroke to lead UNCW on the first day of a two-day dual meet with host Richmond and Old Dominion on Friday at the Collegiate School Aquatic Center.

The Seahawk men lead their former Colonial Athletic Association rival Old Dominion by a score of 125-78. UNCW’s women’s team, meanwhile, holds a 1120-92 lead on ODU but trails UR, 127-77.
Baric led an impressive effort by the AquaHawks as UNCW won eight swimming events and a diving event.
Baric clocked in with times of 1:55.58 in the 200 IM and later posted a winning time of 51.48 in the 100 Backstroke.

Contributing wins for the Seahawk men were junior Valtteri Halonen (100 Butterfly), the 400 Medley Relay of Halonen, sophomores Daniel Dozier and Zach Sowers and senior Gabe Thran. The 200 Free Relay of senior Joe Gallene, sophomore Ned Tyler, junior Drew Gaertner and Thran also added a win, taking the final event of the evening session.

In diving, freshman Allen Crosby won the 1-meter board with 268.30 points.

On the women’s side, senior Rachel Sears (50 Free), sophomore Christine Souther (100 Breaststroke) and junior Hannah Stephenson (100 Backstroke) were winners for the Seahawks.

The meet concludes on Saturday with an 11 a.m. start.

WILMINGTON, NC (UNCW) -– Nicole Costa’s goal early in the second half was the game’s lone score as UNCW blanked visiting College of Charleston, 1-0, in Colonial Athletic Association women’s soccer at the UNCW Soccer Stadium on Friday.

The Seahawks evened their record at 7-7 on the season and 2-2 in the league. The Cougars, meanwhile, dropped to 2-11 with their eighth consecutive loss and to 0-4 in the CAA.

UNCW extended its current undefeated streak at home to eight games, dating back to last season.

On Costa’s goal, her second of the season, sophomore Katrina Guillou gained possession of the ball on the right flank and sent a short cross into the penalty area.

Costa ran onto the cross in the middle of the penalty area and headed the ball inside

the right post at the 46:36 mark of the game.

The Seahawks built a 16-6 advantage in shots as freshman goalkeeper Carolyn Huddy needed just one save to record her first collegiate shutout.

UNCW improved to 7-2-1 all-time against the Cougars, but this was the first meeting between the two coastal rivals since 2007.

With the victory, the Seahawks move into a four-way tie for third, along with James Madison, Hofstra and Towson with six points.

The Seahawks are next at conference rival James Madison on Oct. 18 for a 7 p.m. start.
