ST. LOUIS (AP) – Carlos Beltran and the Cardinals stunned Clayton Kershaw with a four-run third inning, rookie Michael Wacha was again magnificent on the mound and St. Louis advanced to its second World Series in three seasons by roughing up the Los Angeles Dodgers 9-0 in Game 6 of the NL championship series Friday night.

Matt Carpenter sparked St. Louis’ big inning with a one-out double on the 11th pitch of his at-bat. Beltran singled him home and the Cardinals quickly removed all the suspense surrounding a team that squandered a 3-1 series lead in the NLCS last fall against San Francisco.

Game 1 of the World Series is Wednesday at the winner of the ALCS between the Boston Red Sox and Detroit Tigers.

After losing Game 5 in Los Angeles, the Cardinals turned to Wacha once again. The right-hander was even better in outpitching Kershaw for the second time this series.

CARY, NC (UNCW) — Senior Rafael Aita rallied for a three-set victory over Wake Forest’s Nicky Kunz to move into the Singles Round of 16 at the ITA Carolina Men’s Tennis Regional Friday at Cary Tennis Park.

Aita, the 2013 Colonial Athletic Association Player-of-the-Year, bounced back from a narrow loss in the first set to post a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 decision over Kunz late Friday. In another Round of 32 matchup, Duke’s Bruno Semenzato topped Seahawk sophomore Christiaan Van der Burgh, 6-4, 6-0.

Two of UNCW’s three doubles teams advanced following first and second-round action Friday. In first-round doubles action, Zach Hublitz and Van der Burgh downed UNC’s James Coxe and Ryan Hoskins, 8-5, and Santtu Leskinen and Kaue Pereira defeated Winthrop’s Yuta Hirokawa and Steve Patrick by an identical score. Aita and Sam Williams were awarded a bye as the No. 2 seed.

Hublitz and Van der Burgh will join Aita and Williams in third-round play Saturday. Hutbliz and Van der Burgh topped Winthrop’s Juan Pablo Boada and Corey Decandia, 8-3, while Aita and Williams, playing their first match in the draw, thumped Elon’s Jordan Kaufman and Robert Lindgren, 8-2.

Action in singles and doubles continues early Saturday in the bracketed event in the Triangle.

WILMINGTON, NC (UNCW) -– Despite taking the lead on a goal by sophomore Katrina Guillou in the third minute, UNCW suffered a 2-1 setback at James Madison in Colonial Athletic Association women’s soccer action Friday at University Park.

The Dukes picked up their ninth win in 10 games as they improved to 12-4 overall and 4-1 in CAA play. The Seahawk, meanwhile, slipped to 7-8 and 2-3 as they suffered their sixth one-goal loss of the season.

“JMU put us under tremendous pressure in the first half and we felt fortunate to only be down one goal at the break,” said UNCW Head Coach Paul Cairney. “The second half was a much better effort by our team. We have a lot to be pleased with and were quite unlucky not to tie it up in final 15 minutes. We will bounce back and get ready for William and Mary on Sunday.”

Guillou gave the Seahawks the early 1-0 advantage at the 2:50 mark, using a ball played by fellow sophomore Morgan Leyble to get behind the Dukes defense and beat sophomore keeper Ellen Forest in a 1-v-1 opportunity for her team-leading seventh goal of the season.

Junior Katie Hyland drew JMU level at 1-all less than 10 minutes after Guillou’s tally, taking a feed from freshman Allie Bunner and converting her own 1-v-1 opportunity in the 13th minute for her sixth goal of the campaign.

Senior Lauren Wilson tallied the eventual game-winning goal at the 26:46 mark, putting home a feed from freshman Ashley Herndon for her third goal of the campaign. Junior Sam Lofton was also credited with an assist on the play.

James Madison held a 22-9 shot advantage in the contest, highlighted by a 12-4 margin in the first half. Both teams were awarded seven corner kicks during the match.

Forrest was credited with one save in goal for the Dukes as she picked up her 12th victory of the season. Freshman Carolyn Huddy got the start in goal for the Seahawks and finished with a season-high nine saves.

Both teams return to action Sunday. UNCW travels to William & Mary for a 2 p.m. contest while James Madison hosts College of Charleston in a 1 p.m. start.

WILMINGTON, NC (UNCW) -– Senior Christi Laite recorded a team-high 12 kills to lead UNCW to a 3-0 (26-24, 25-20, 25-16) sweep of James Madison in Colonial Athletic Association volleyball action Friday at Hanover Hall.

The Seahawks improved to 13-7 overall and 2-4 in CAA play as they claimed the season series from the Dukes, who moved to 8-11 and 3-3 with the setback.

Laite committed just three attack errors in 21 attempts for a .429 hitting percentage to lead a balanced UNCW attack that saw nine players record at least one kill in the match. Sophomore Victoria Phillips tallied 17 assists while freshman Alyssa Desjardins notched 12 assists and added 14 digs for her fourth double-double of the season. Senior Haley Collins chipped in 13 digs and tallied a team-high four service aces as the Seahawks recorded 11 service aces during the contest. Sophomore Meredith Peacock paced the Seahawks’ blocked efforts, finishing with eight total blocks (one solo).

Reigning CAA Rookie-of-the-Week Janey Goodman tallied a match-best 13 kills and fellow freshman Kate Whitmore chipped in 10 for JMU, who was limited to a .107 hitting percentage for the match. Redshirt junior Kristi Richardson tallied 16 assists and sophomore Sarah Patterson added 15. Sophomore MacKenzie Kleespies paced all players with 19 digs while sophomore Megan Niski added 14.

UNCW rallied to take the first set, 26-24, scoring the final three points of the frame to take the set moments after JMU finished an 11-3 run that allowed the Dukes to overcome a 20-13 deficit and force set point.

The Seahawks once again raced out to an early lead in the second set, jumping out to a 14-4 edge, only to again see JMU battle back with a 6-2 spurt to pull within three, 22-19. UNCW kept the Dukes from drawing any closer, scoring three of the final four points of the frame to take a 25-20 decision and a 2-0 lead.

The third set once again saw the Seahawks benefit from a quick start, this time building a 12-4 cushion before JMU battled back with eight of the next 10 points to make it a 14-12 contest. UNCW would pull away from there, using a kill by Laite to spark an 11-4 run that would give the Seahawks a 25-16 triumph and the sweep.

Both teams return to action Sunday. UNCW hosts William & Mary while JMU travels to the College of Charleston. Start time for both matches is set for 1 p.m.
