WILSON, NC (CFA) — Congratulations to the Cape Fear Academy varsity girls tennis team for defeating Caldwell Academy 8-1 in the state semifinals on Friday. CFA improves to 16-0 overall.

#2 seed CFA faces #1 seed and undefeated St. David’s School on Saturday, October 26 at 10am in Wilson at the Barton College Tennis Complex.

WILMINGTON, NC (UNCW) -– Sophomore Lauren Stollar scored the only goal of the game in the 83rd minute to lead Drexel to a 1-0 victory over UNCW in Colonial Athletic Association women’s soccer action Friday at the UNCW Soccer Stadium.

The Dragons improved to 6-10-2 overall and 2-5-0 in CAA play as they kept their postseason dreams alive with the one-goal victory. The Seahawks, meanwhile, slipped to 8-9-0 and 3-4-0 as they suffered their first loss at home of the season season.

Stollar’s game-winning strike came at the 82:41 mark as she knocked home a ball from the middle of the box for her second goal of the campaign. Junior Megan Hammaker was credited with an assist on the play.

The Seahawks pushed forward and attempted to net the equalizer, but the Dragons limited the Seahawks to one shot attempt in the final seven minutes to preserve the one-goal advantage.

Drexel posted a 15-10 shot advantage in the contest, highlighted by a 10-6 margin in the second half. The Seahawks held a 4-2 edge in corner kicks taken.

Junior Eve Badana got the start in goal and made two saves to pick up her sixth victory of the season. Freshman Carolyn Huddy got the start in goal for UNCW and finished with seven stops, including a pair of point-blank denials of freshman Nicolette Watkins just moments before the Drexel goal.

Both teams close out the regular season Sunday in contests with postseason implications as UNCW hosts Delaware in a 2 p.m. start while Drexel is at College of Charleston for a 1 p.m. kickoff. The Seahawks can qualify for the 2013 CAA Women’s Soccer Championship with either a win or a tie against the Blue Hens while the Dragons need a win against the Cougars and a UNCW loss to Delaware in order to make the six-team field.

WILMINGTON, NC (UNCW) -– Featuring two of the top three players atop the individual leaderboard, Alabama grabbed a 10-stroke lead following opening-day action of The Landfall Tradition Friday at the Country Club of Landfall.

The college women’s golf tournament, in its 12th year at CCL, runs Friday through Sunday at the Pete Dye Course and features 18 of the nation’s top teams and many of the country’s top golfers.

“With the cooler temperatures and a strong north wind, today’s conditions made scoring very difficult,” said veteran UNCW Head Coach Cindy Ho. Temperatures in the area dipped into the low 50s and a stiff breeze challenged the 95-player field.

The Crimson Tide, ranked 10th in the Golfstat poll, last played on the course during the 2010 NCAA Women’s Golf Championships, finishing third in the event. And during Friday’s opening round of The Tradition, Coach Mic Potter’s team looked right at home.

Alabama conquered the Par-72, 6,204-yard layout with a three–under par 285 total, paced by Stephanie Meadow’s 2-under 70. The Crimson Tide own a 10-shot lead over second place Duke (295), followed by South Carolina (300), Arizona (304) and North Carolina (305).

Meadow, who won the Southeastern Conference and 2013 NCAA East Regional championships one year ago, had three birdies on the back nine. She holds a one-stroke lead over teammates Hannah Collier and Emma Talley, North Carolina’s Jackie Chang and South Carolina’s Katelyn Dambaugh.

Three of the five players that scored under-par on the first day hailed from Alabama – Meadow (70), Collier (71) and Talley (71). Only six golfers in the field played the layout in par or better on a breezy, cool day along the Intracoastal Waterway.

The average score on the first day of competition was 78.81 and the toughest hole proved to be the 385-yard Par-4 third hole, which featured no birdies, just 38 pars, 44 bogies and 11 double bogeys.

Senior Lori Beth Adams shot a 3-over 75 to lead the Seahawks, who own 11th place. The Burlington, N.C., product led the field with 15 pars, just ahead of Meadow’s 14. Megan Burnham tied for second overall with four birdies during her solid opening round.

“Overall, I was pleased with how we competed,” said Ho. “I wanted our women to play their own game, which they did, and I’m proud of them.

“We were in the first wave this morning and I was pleased to see us keep the conditions from really impacting our score. As the day went on, the scores kept getting higher, so we were able to benefit from that and put ourselves in a good position heading into the second round.

“Megan had a very solid front nine and overcame a couple hiccups on the back side by finishing strong with two birdies in her final three holes. Both Megan and Lori Beth had good showings on a tough day on the course.”

The second round begins at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, with even cooler temperatures expected in the morning.
