YMCA expands afterschool care in Brunswick County

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — The YMCA of Southeastern North Carolina is expanding its Afterschool Care program in Brunswick County to serve the growing population in the southern part of the state.
The Y is adding Southport and Jessie Mae Monroe elementary schools to the list of schools it currently serves.
Brunswick County Schools began partnering with the Y at the start of the 2023-2024 school year, offering Afterschool Care at Lincoln, Belville, Town Creek, and Union elementary schools. The Y will continue serving these schools, in addition to Southport and Jessie Mae Monroe, during the 2024-2025 school year.
“Brunswick County is very large and spread out, but most importantly, it is growing, and so many families are looking for different opportunities for their children to participate in,” said Elisha Dixson, Youth Services Regional Program Director for the YMCA of Southeastern North Carolina. “At the Y, we were able to see this need and are doing our best to meet the needs of those families. By expanding quality Afterschool programs in rural areas, parents can make a living and provide for their families while knowing their children will be safe and can learn in a nurturing environment.”
The Y’s Afterschool Care program is available each day that school is in session. At the end of the school day, Brunswick County students at participating schools are released to the care of Y staff and stay on-site at their schools until pick-up, which ends at 6 p.m. The program offers a variety of activities that allow students to explore and develop their interests and talents, including sports, team building, outside play, group exercise, and more. Children are also offered a healthy snack and structured homework help.
