Young athletes enjoy Special Olympics Fall Games
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Young athletes left it all out on the field at Legion Stadium in Wilmington.
Special Olympics of New Hanover County is hosting their Fall Games, allowing children ages 2 through 7 to run around and enjoy a variety of sports and activities.
Children with and without intellectual disabilities participated in relay races, dance parties, and obstacle courses.
The Fall Games focus on showcasing that no matter the age or skill set, everyone can have fun.
Brooke Deamaral, Special Olympics Coordinator for Wilmington, emphasizes the importance of inclusivity in the event. “Maybe they can’t always go participate in traditional sports, but we have a ton of opportunities we can offer them. They can still get out there and do the same exact sports as everyone else; we just maybe need to adapt it to make it inclusive for all. The parents can see that we really do have so many opportunities, and we just want all their kids to be able to have fun in the best way they can.”
Another Fall Games event will be held tomorrow, catering to school-age and adult participants.
Deamaral mentions that they are still looking for more volunteers to help out with tomorrow’s activities.
