YWCA Lower Cape Fear holds a public chat called “Mission Possible: Still We Rise”

"We cannot let fear deter us. We got to step up and ban together."

NEW HANOVER COUNTY (WWAY)–The YWCA of Lower Cape Fear hosted a “fireside chat” Thursday night, during which people could discuss their concerns about various race and equality issues.
The conversation was called — “Mission Possible: Still We Rise” and it focused on resilience and empowerment in politics, women’s health, and economic advancement. It was the first of many planned events happening, leading up to Martin Luther King Junior Day. Velva Jenkins is the president and CEO of the YWCA. She says these are conversations for peace and focus on Dr. King’s work. She also says these conversations are important to have with a new administration about to move into the white house, as some people do not feel as though their voices will be heard.

“We cannot let fear deter us. We got to step up and ban together. One of the ladies already talked about unity. That’s what the community has to do. It’s not about just Black people. We have people who are White or some other race that are struggling as well socially and economically,” Jenkins said.

Jenkins also hopes to motivate people to not give up fighting for women’s rights and other challenges individuals may face.
