The North Carolina Department of Justice confirms there is an active investigation into criminal allegations made against the Leland Police Department. DOJ spokeswoman Noelle Talley says the SBI opened the investigation November 1.

For the third time since mid-August a candidate for Leland Town Council has dropped out of the election. The Brunswick County Board of Elections says Kerrie Wallace withdrew today.

The Brunswick County Board of Elections says Herbert Barnes dropped out of the race Friday. The Board of Elections also says Bald Head Island candidate Ken Miller died over the weekend. Both men's names will be on the ballot, though, in November.

Leland Town Councilwomen Brenda Bozeman and Patricia Batleman have called a special meeting of the council for Thursday evening to discuss "personnel actions." The meeting will start at 7 p.m. and is open to the public.

Leland Police charged Herbert Barnes with assault on a female after an incident at his home in March. This morning the case was dismissed.
