Opening their second season, the Port City Chargers semi-pro football team got off on the right foot as they downed the Charleston Snipers 12-6 on Saturday.

With sixteen new members on this year's Wilmington Hammerheads USL Division 2 soccer team, it was hard to know what to expect coming out of the gates. Unfortunately, the Hammerheads have stumbled and fallen off the pace; with Saturday's 2-0 loss at Crystal Palace Baltimore, the Hammerheads are now 0-3 to start the 2008 season.

After winning their opening round game, Hoggard was beat by Greensboro Page while Laney was defeated in the first round.

Hoggard and Ashley each posted home wins on Friday in the first round of the NCHSAA baseball tournament, however Laney was beaten by Fuquay-Varina.

The second round of the NCHSAA girls' soccer tourney got underway Friday night; Hoggard went on for an easy 6-0 win, but NHHS was eliminated in heart breaking fashion by the number one team in the state.

ATHENS, Ga. – UNC Wilmington sophomore Carmen Perez-Narbon carded an even-par 72 Friday and sits in a tie for fourth place after the second round of the 2008 NCAA Women’s Golf East Regional at the University of Georgia Golf Course.

The Wilmington Sharks are starting off the week on the right note with the signings of three more pitchers to add to the stable, including a former New Hanover High School standout.

The 29th-ranked Seahawks took two of three from George Mason over the weekend to maintain their spot atop the CAA standings. UNCW is two victories from the CAA record for conference wins in a season set by JMU in 2006 (22-8). All three of the Seahawks’ league losses have come in the opening game of the series. Senior catcher Mark Carver batted .455 (5-11) with three homers, seven runs scored and nine RBI last week and he also drew five walks. Carver tops the CAA with 19 homers, which is two shy of the school record, and his league-leading 70 RBI are just three are short of the UNCW season mark.

WILMINGTON, N.C. - Sophomore Rhett Miller scored from first base on a double off the leftfield wall by senior Jes Snyder in the bottom of the 11th inning as No. 29 UNC Wilmington trimmed No. 17 N.C. State, 3-2, in a key non-conference baseball game Wednesday at Brooks Field.

WILMINGTON, N.C. - East Carolina blistered UNCW Wilmington for 14 runs in the first five innings as the Pirates cruised past the Seahawks, 14-7, in college baseball action Tuesday at Brooks Field.
