Dodgeball for some reason or another over the course of time vanished as a recreation choice for school children. It's now back on the forefront again, with adults. In fact Monday marked the opening night of the new dodgeball league at the Wilmington Athletic Club. It's more social than combative, but the competitive juices definitely come out when the whistle is blown. Full story...

Football season is here. We want to remind you the 5th Quarter is the place to be every Friday night for gridiron coverage throughout the season. The 12 & under intermediate tennis team from Wilmington's Cape Fear Country Club won the Southern Regional 12 & Under title over the weekend. They opened the weekend with a victory against a team from Alabama. Wilmington proceeded to beat Mississippi, South Carolina and Louisiana. In the championship match the Cape Fear Country Club squad defeated a team from Georgia to claim the title. Full story...

Jason Jones is the new head football coach at West Columbus High School. He'll also be the school's new director of athletics. Jones takes over a football team that finished with a 3-10 record last season. Full story...

The Laney Buccaneers recently participated in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. Laney head football coach Ashaad Yeoman and Laney football director of media relations Cori Stukes challenged the football teams at Ashley, Hoggard and New Hanover to follow suit. The Buccaneers also challenged a handful of media people, including WWAY's John Rendleman. Full story...

For the last four years Buzz Peterson has been a Wilmington resident. As of Thursday that's no longer the case. The former UNCW men's head basketball coach moved his family to the Charlotte area. Peterson will be working with the NBA Charlotte Hornets down the road. This means his son, Rob, will not be playing for Laney in the upcoming basketball season. Full story...

It's been a tough month for Hoggard head football coach Scott Braswell in regard to his health, but Braswell will be on the sidelines on Friday night at the BB&T Jamboree. In fact he'll also coach in the regular season opener before heading to the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota for surgery to remove a cancerous tumor. Full story...
