A first round state playoff matchup of Hoggard versus New Hanover highlights the schedule for the first round of the high school football state playoffs. New Hanover beat Hoggard 13-7 on Friday. The two Wilmington teams get to do it all over again. The winner will advance to round two while the losing team's season will be over. Full story...

You're going to need extra patience driving around Wilmington on Saturday. There will be a few traffic hotspots due to the internationally recognized iron distance and half iron distance triathlon. Every Wednesday we honor a high school football team from the Cape Fear region with our Team of the Week award. This week, though, we're going to do something different.
Today the award goes to a middle school football team for the first time ever.
