Smoke alarms installed across New Hanover and Pender counties

HAMPSTEAD, NC (WWAY) —  The Red Cross, fire fighters, and volunteers came together Saturday to install free smoke alarms for residents in portions of northern New Hanover and Pender counties.

James Jarvis with the Red Cross says 125 smoke alarms were installed.

Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer Jeremy Thomas has been volunteering with the Red Cross for three years and says he is so glad to be a part of the organization.

“You have homes in some of the more less privileged areas that just don’t have anything,” said Thomas. “They may have small children in the home. Some elderly people have trouble hearing so we will be able to install bed shakers as well later on to help her out if something where to happen at night.”

If you would like to request a smoke alarm in your home, call your local fire department or the Red Cross.
