Several agencies respond to poultry plant fire in Duplin County

TEACHEY, NC (WWAY) — Around 11:30 p.m. Saturday night a fire call came in that the House of Raeford poultry plant in Teachey, NC was on fire. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.

Pender County Fire Marshal Tommy Batson tells us that several agencies were on the scene at 252 Butterball road as they tried to put out the fire. The agencies included Duplin, Pender, Sampson, New Hanover, Jones and Onlsow County Fire Departments. Many will be on scene overnight to assess the situation.

Batson says that many of the trucks had to haul water to the location to help control the fire, along with using water on site.

While crews tried to put out the remaining hot spots today, he says everyone in surrounding areas are safe.

“No threat to any of the outside areas from any chemical or hazardous material leaks,” Baston said. “The North Carolina regional response team out of wilmington was on scene this morning and they’ve been released.”

Some smoke is still coming from the building and the fire is currently under investigation.

The plant will be closed until further notice. Only one injury has been reported and there were no fatalities.
