‘Thankful’ firefighters continue collecting donations for Fill the Boot campaign

OGDEN, NC (WWAY) —  New Hanover County firefighters and rescue members were able to raised over $55,000 during their annual Fill the Boot drive earlier this month and they were back out again this weekend.

From Black Friday to Sunday, they will be on the streets collecting donations working to reach their goal of $75,000.

All the proceeds are to benefit children and adults affected by a muscle disease.

New Hanover County Fire Captain Benjamin Bobzien says all the money that is raised will stay within the community. He says it goes towards research, support groups, equipment repairs, along with giving children with MD an opportunity to attend summer camp.

“Anytime we can help the citizens more than just putting out fires or responding to medical calls,” said Bobzien. “Helping them additionally makes us feel great  and right around Thanksgiving, I’m thankful for that.”

Firefighters will be found at many intersections throughout the county including one in Monkey Junction and Ogden.

Bobzien says the Fill the Boot campaign will end Sunday evening. The money will then be counted.

WWAY will let you know if the fire department was able to meet or excess their goal. Check back with us for an update.
