FIRST ON 3: Employee injured at the Port of Wilmington, investigation underway

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) – The State Port of Wilmington is under investigation by the Department of Labor, after a worker was injured on the job recently.

The Occupational Safety and Health Division has opened an inspection with the port.

A spokesperson with the Department of Labor says employees were replacing the light fixtures in a building and using a lift to remove the old lights. Somehow, the victim was pinned between the guardrail of the lift basket and the light fixture. A spotter on the ground overrode the device to bring the victim down. He said EMS was called, but there was no word on the victim’s condition.

We reached out to the Port of Wilmington last week, but a spokesperson would not comment.
