4 NC officers on leave after man dies in police custody

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) – Winston-Salem police say four officers are on administrative duty after a man who was subdued with pepper spray died in custody.

Authorities said in a news release that 31-year-old Travis Nevelle Page became unresponsive after he was taken into custody Wednesday night following a brief struggle with officers. Page died at a local hospital.

Police responded to Page’s home to investigate a report of a firearm being discharged. Police say they found a handgun on Page.

Authorities say the victim was black, and the four officers are white. Two have been with the department for 20 years or more, while the others have been there one and three years.

The State Bureau of Investigation is handling the case. Placing officers on administrative leave is standard procedure in such cases.
