5 things to know in the murder trial of a Chinese delivery driver

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A New Hanover County jury spent the morning deciding whether a man is guilty in the murder of a Chinese delivery driver.

The trial began last week for Cornell Haugabook. He is charged in the killing of Zhen Bo Liu in 2012.

Here are five things to know about the trial:

1. The victim was a delivery driver for China King named Zhen Bo Liu, 60. He was robbed of $42.27 and shot to death while delivering food on June 14, 2012.

2. District Attorney Ben David said Liu left his wife in China to come to the United States to make money to send back to her. Liu and his wife welcomed a grandson into the world one month before Liu was killed.

3. There were six people originally charged in connection to this murder and they were all under the age of 21.

Cornell Dwayne Haugabook Jr., 20; Mustafaa Friend, 15; Rasheed Thompson, 16; and Manije Johnson-Martin, 16, were all facing a first-degree murder charges. Marvin White, 18, and Nathaniel Lawrence, 16, were each indicted on a charge of robbery with a dangerous weapon.

4. Haugabook now faced four charges in this murder trial:

a. Posession of a firearm by felon.
b. Conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon.
c. Discharging a weapon into a vehicle to inflict serious injury.
d. First Degree Murder.

5. Friend and Haugabook were going to be tried together originally, but the attorneys decided against that. Friend will be tried next.
