5th Quarter Player of the Week: Kenjuan Watkins
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — This week we had three players from New Hanover County up for the honor. You voted and the 5th Quarter Player of the Week is Kenjuan Watkins, the cornerback from Laney High School.
It’s another player from Laney High School. This time it’s the defensive star.
“It feels good just to know that I have a good support system and everything,” Watkins said. “Just to see everyone come out and win player of the week, a player from Laney High School, it’s just good to show that we do have people on our side voting for us to win.”
The senior buccaneer got the town jumping Friday night right off the bat by blocking a punt to set up an opening score over North Brunswick.
“It most definitely set the tone for us when I got that and scoring right after it just started the game off really strong and fast and let them know we were coming to play,” Watkins said.
Success has not come without adversity, something Watkins said he knows too well.
“I had a heart condition that kind of held me back for two years and it was hard,” he said.
After missing two years of football, Watkins is making his presence felt on the field and he appreciated every minutes of it.
“This year’s mindset was to take it stride by stride, going 100 percent everyday and make sure I take advantage of every opportunity given my way,” Watkins said.
Through the adversity, Watkins has had a clear eye view and he intends to keep that in his future.
“My goals for football is to look back at the end of the season and say that I did everything I can and I played hard every snap I could,” he said. “As a team, I want to say that we won every match up battle that we could. Just no regrets.”
Congratulations to Kenjuan Watkins for being named our 5th Quarter Player of the Week!
