6th graders compete in forestry events at Hugh MacRae Park
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — In New Hanover County, sixth graders from Ronald-Grise and Murray Middle schools spent the day at Hugh MacRae Park competing in a variety of forestry events.
The students competed against other classes in dendrology, measuring land and trees, identifying trees, and the bucket brigade, where the kids were able to put out a fire.
One teacher there said she was excited to see the kids so pumped up about forestry.
“We get to see the students a lot of things like math, social studies, and science, and kind of put them in a real life scenario of why this is used and why it is important,” said Katherine Hill, sixth grade Language Arts Teacher at Murray Middle.
The winning class from each school will receive a pizza party but Hill says the real reward is being able to spend a beautiful day at the park learning about nature.
