RALEIGH, NC (AP) – A new year means more than new 20 laws take effect. Several focus on cars and driving. Others address abortion, taxes and unemployment.

The gas tax falls by a penny to 35 cents per gallon and then again to 34 cents next summer. Division of Motor Vehicles fees on titles, registration and licenses are going up, however, under the new laws, which take effect on Friday.

Under another new law, physicians performing abortions will have to provide more data to state officials about procedures performed after the 16th week of pregnancy.

Taxes will also be affected by the new laws. Standard deductions are going up for individual income taxes for 2016, and corporate tax rates will decrease.
