St. James Episcopal Church welcomes speakers from Westminster Abbey for annual speaker series

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — St. James Episcopal Church is set to host an engaging evening with Westminster Abbey as part of its annual speaker series, promising a treat for history enthusiasts and those fascinated by royal traditions. Reverend Phillip Craig, the Rector of St. James Episcopal Church, shared insights about the upcoming event.

Reverend Craig provided a brief overview of Westminster Abbey, describing it as a “royal peculiar” connected to the Church of England but relatively independent from a specific bishop’s oversight. He expressed excitement about hosting two guests, Reverend Jamie Hawkey, the Canon Theologian for Westminster Abbey, and Mr. Martin Castledine, the Dean’s Verger.

The decision to bring these speakers to Wilmington was driven by existing relationships and friendships with some of St. James’ parishioners. Reverend Craig shed light on the background and roles of the speakers.

“As a Canon Theologian, Jamie Hawkey is in charge of essentially promoting the theology of Westminster Abbey and making sure it’s a consistent message across the board,” Rev. Craig said. “And he is also the Chaplain to the King, that is a part of his role.”

Martin Castledine, the Dean’s Verger, manages the logistics of large events at Westminster Abbey.

“Any of the large things we would have seen at Westminster Abbey recently, most especially, the celebration of the life of Queen Elizabeth, he was front and center helping make sure that everything goes smoothly through that particular event,” Rev. Craig said.

The main event is scheduled for Monday evening at 7:00 p.m. at St. James Parish. Reverend Craig invites anyone interested to attend the free event. The presentation will cover Hawkey’s role as the Canon Theologian, insights into life at Westminster Abbey, and historical and contemporary connections with the royal family.

Additionally, Hawkey will be the guest preacher at St. James Parish on Sunday morning at 10.15 a.m., welcoming all to join the church service.

No tickets are required for either event; everyone is welcome. Attendees are advised to arrive early in order to find parking. The event will conclude with a reception.
