‘Teacher of the Month’ celebrated for creating a safe space

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Middle school can be a challenging time for students, but teachers like Adam Godfrey are making a lasting impact in New Hanover County.

The 7th-grade math teacher at Holly Shelter Middle School and Laney High School baseball coach was recently surprised with WWAY’s Teacher of the Month award, recognizing his dedication both in and out of the classroom.

Godfrey was nominated by a parent who described him as an exceptional teacher and a positive role model, praising his ability to make students feel safe and supported during difficult times.

“I feel like I’m a giant kid at heart,” Godfrey said. “I relate so much to them. They’re so much fun to be around, and I kind of feed off that energy.”

Teaching math to middle schoolers isn’t always easy, but Godfrey’s enthusiasm and connection with his students make a difference. Students like Blakely Jones say his caring nature and understanding attitude stand out.

“Overall, he’s a really good teacher. He’s caring and he understands us and is always there for us if we ever need anything,” Jones said.

For Godfrey, teaching is about more than just academics. He hopes to inspire his students to be kind, compassionate individuals.

“I’ve had so many great people around me—great teachers, great parents, great family—that have really helped me along the way,” Godfrey said. “That’s all I want to be for them. Just be as great a person and help show them how to be great people to each other and help them live better lives.”

As part of the Teacher of the Month recognition, Godfrey received a $400 prize, courtesy of Fulford Heating and Cooling and Beach Bagels and Subs.
