‘Teacher of the Month’ named state finalist for Presidential Award
BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — While many students across the Cape Fear region have been out of school this week due to winter weather, some kids in Brunswick County might be disappointed to miss out on time with one teacher in particular.
Becky Wyland teaches 4th grade at Town Creek Elementary School. She has been named WWAY’s Teacher of the Month for January, an honor that comes after more than two decades in the classroom.
Although she is relatively new to Town Creek Elementary, Wyland has already made a significant impact on both her students and the community.
“I knew it was the perfect fit because I could tell they really care about and love the students here, and that’s the most important thing to me,” Wyland said about her experience at the school.
Wyland teaches multiple subjects, but has a passion for science in particular. She’s actually been recognized as a 2024 state finalist for the prestigious Presidential Awards for Excellence in Science Teaching.
“I absolutely love the whole world of science, and that you can literally not escape it. Everywhere you go, science is the reason for everything that happens,” Wyland said.
Despite her recent success, Wyland’s journey hasn’t always been straightforward. Reflecting on her own experiences as a student, Wyland shared that she struggled academically, especially with math.
“I just didn’t believe in myself,” she said. “What I realized is that I just learned differently than others, and I think that is actually what makes me a really good teacher. I understand the struggles that students go through.”
Wyland’s approach to teaching goes beyond just delivering lessons—she makes an effort to connect with her students and their families. Her commitment to maintaining open communication with parents is just one of the reasons why she was nominated by a parent for this recognition.
“Sometimes we can doubt ourselves, and sometimes you feel like, am I making a difference? So to have been here for such a short time and to have that be seen really means a lot to me,” she said.
But it’s not just parents who recognize Wyland’s efforts. Her students were quick to express their admiration for their teacher, sharing a number of reasons why they love her, from making science fun and offering extra recess to her encouragement and kindness.
“She makes science really fun,” one student said.
“She helps me understand everything,” another added.
“She loves us so much,” one more student chimed in.
As part of the Teacher of the Month recognition, Wyland received a $400 prize, courtesy of Fulford Heating and Cooling and Beach Bagels and Subs.
