WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — At the New Hanover County Board of Education Agenda Review meeting Tuesday emotions ran high when reviewing the AI Pilot Program.

A motion failed four to three to move forward with the $3-million grant funded AI pilot program that uses cameras integrated with AI technology in schools.  The motion was to accept the pilot program safety grant to implement upgrades to the school safety system including cameras that integrate AI technology beginning in the high schools and middle schools, not activating the facial recognition features.

Board members agreed they want to make the schools safer although some were not happy with the vendor ‘Eviden’ itself.

Board member Judy Justice is one of the board members that is not fond of ‘Eviden’.

“We need something like this, but we need it in a sense that we can trust the group that is bringing it in. Everything that we can possibly do to help our kids is great. This did not feel like it would be helping our kids. They did not add anything that we were pretty much already doing except a couple of things,” Justice shares.

Justice adds it was a hard decision, and she knows the whole board wants to protect the kids.
